DEVELOPMENT DATES: Start -- 1870. De Groot, in his speech at Delmonico's during the memorial dinner, mentions that the idea for the statue began some two years earlier. See "Franklin's Birthday," New York Times, 18 January 1872.
DEVELOPMENT DATES: Dedication -- 1/17/1872. This registry follows the date as engraved on the statue itself and as noted in "Franklin's Birthday," above. Other sources (SIRIS, Gayle) record the dedication as 1/12/1872.
