Description
This statue of New Netherland governor and Director-General Peter Stuyvesant, of the Dutch West India Company, recalls his 17th century leadership of the New York colony. Sculpted in 1898 by John Massey Rhind, and produced by Gorham Manufacturing Company, New York, this bronze work was originally designed for and installed on the façade of the Exchange Court Building, New York. Emily Crane Chadbourne, president of Kingston’s Senate House Association, secured the statue at an opportune moment. She arranged for its installation on Kingston’s Academy Green, following a redesign by landscape architect Alfred Gieffert, Jr. Dedicated June 9, 1950, it is situated near similar monuments to Messieurs Hudson and Clinton.
