SITE DEVELOPMENT: Start assumed to be year in which legislature authorized the tribute, 1891. In 1902 artist at his own instigation and cost replaced his original sculpture with the statue now standing in Battery Park. In 1952, granite base replaced with marble base. At this time, Registry not sure if (a) Gorham did just the second stature or the first and second statures or b) did Roman Bronze Works do both the first statue as well as the several plaques
