Description
Newell W. Rising, a coal passer aboard the U.S.S. Battle Ship Maine, was killed on February 15, 1898, when an explosion, believed to be a mine, sank the warship in the harbor of Havana, Cuba. Shortly after, the Spanish-American War started. Newell is remembered with this low-relief plaque, created by sculptor George Beck and made by Abendroth Foundry, Port Chester, New York. Situated in Greenwood Union Cemetery, in nearby Rye, NY, this work of Beck is attached to the side of a granite rock structure (which itself comprises the base for a monument to veterans of the Civil War; see ID #1536).
