Comments and Notes
LEAD SPONSOR: Other -- Mildred Andrews Fund, Cleveland, Ohio
COMMENT:A popular gay bar and dance hall, the Stonewall Inn, near Christopher Park, was raided by police during the night of June 27/28, 1969, touching off a melee which many characterize as the "flashpoint for the gay rights movement" in the U.S. (NYC Parks & Recreation). Segal's sculpture commemorates this battle.
