Comments and Notes
THE STORY: Ideals -- Freedom of the press. Butler, below, notes that "Early historians have called Bradford 'the father of our press.'" He was agruing for such freedom both publicly and legally as early as the late seventeenth century. John Peter Zenger was apprenticed to Bradford.
DEVELOPMENT DATES: On 5/20/1863 the original headstone in Trinity Churchyard was replaced by an exact duplicate. The dedication was accompanied by a public affair in the Hall of the Union, Cooper Institute. As of that date the Fieldguide assumes the monument to be public. The original gravestone is at the New-York Historical Society.
