Description
This memorial remembers seven city of Peekskill, New York, volunteer firefighters: Lockwood, Selleck, Barmore, Casscles, Torpy, Cole and Greene. These men died fighting a fire at a Fleischmann Manufacturing Company grain warehouse – a large facility and one of its 30-foot high by 2-foot thick exterior walls fell onto the firemen, burying them. (Others were injured in the fire and a company warehouseman was also killed. See too ID # 1886, centered on this accident.) The time of the tragedy was August 1, 1918; the Great War would conclude, November 11th, a few months later. • The engraved stone monument is situated at the western end of the park adjoining Station #3, at Crompond Road and South Division Street. • The memorial’s sponsor is the Peekskill Fire Department, and it was dedicated in 1965.
