Description
The plaque commemorates the Hudson-Fulton celebration of 1909 – the combined 300th anniversary celebration of explorer Henry Hudson’s journey up the Hudson River under sail and the 100th birthday of inventor and engineer Robert Fulton’s trip on the same river under steam. Hudson’s Half-Moon and Fulton’s Clermont are pictured on the move in this low-relief work created by sculptor Philip H. Martiny, French-born and Saint-Gaudens-trained. Sponsored jointly by the town of Edgewater and Bergen County, New Jersey, the memorial was dedicated in 1909. It is situated in the lobby of the Edgewater Community Center, at River Road and Glenwood Avenue.
