Description
The New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial honors all veterans from the country and state who served during the war in Vietnam, especially those 1,562 NJ men and women who were killed or listed as missing. An open-air pavilion, the memorial’s design has several notable features. On the pavilion’s floor is a three-person sculptural group -- downed warrior being attended by a nurse with a third, armed soldier behind her. Nearby, and shading the group, is a Red Oak, the NJ state tree. And ringing the top of the amphitheatre-like setting are 366 black granite panels, standing upright and inscribed, with the names of and other information about the war dead. The order of the list is by the day of the year on which the person was killed. The site was designed by Hien Nguyen; sculptor Thomas Jay Warren executed the grouping, working with the Johnson Atelier, founder. The site occupies some five acres at the Garden State Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ.
