Description
This commemorative is the state of Connecticut’s official memorial to the innocent victims and families of the September 11th attacks. A living memorial, the work presents a contemplative space offering comfort and the potential for healing, of both survivors and the larger, state-wide community. • The design of the memorial, by Shavaun Towers of Towers|Golde, New Haven, includes on its third-of-an-acre site trees and shrubs, four large planters, the principal memorial stone with incised dedication and four granite benches. • These design elements, situated near water’s edge on the south point of Sherwood Island State Park, Westport, Connecticut, pull the visitor toward the Long Island Sound and, then, even further southwest toward Manhattan until -- at least until the morning of September 11, 2001 -- one arrives at the World Trade Center. • Sponsorship of the memorial came from the state and key operating units, with financial and in-kind support from, also, private sources as well as a grant from the U.S. Forest Service Living Memorial Project. The work was dedicated September 5, 2002. And during the 2003 ceremonies on September 4th the 152 engraved memorial names were dedicated.
