Description
This memorial recalling the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in the City of New York brings our attention and, assuredly, our hearts back to March 25, 1911: one hundred forty-six people – mostly young women, mostly Jewish immigrants -- were killed trying to escape, many by jumping to their deaths through windows because exit doors were locked, isles blocked and fire escapes damaged. The workplace inferno broke out on the three upper floors of a 10-story building near Washington Square, in Manhattan. • A stele of stone, the monument presents an engraved inscription that introduces its story and its call – for a better and more beautiful world. The work is situated in the Mount Zion Cemetery, Workmen’s Circle section, Path 43R, Maspeth, Queens county, New York state. • The database knows of other public monuments and memorials recalling the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire; see COMMENTS box, below, for information.
