Description
The monument reminds us of and honors Confederate Civil War soldiers, as well as their families, who after the War voluntarily moved northward and settled in the southeast area of New York state. Their grave markers encircle this 60-foot obelisk, dedicated to Confederate veterans who ventured into what might have seemed at least initially a strange, and likely strained, setting, far from home. • The monument is situated in the southwest corner of Mount Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, where Jackson Avenue intersects Saw Mill River Road. • Also known as the Confederate Monument and Burial Ground, the piece was sponsored financially by Charles B. "Broadway" Rouss, former confederate soldier and later New York businessman, under the auspices of the New York Camp, United Confederate Veterans. Today, the site is monitored and cared for by the Westchester-Putnam-Dutchess Chapter, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Department of New York. • Both monument and burial ground were dedicated May 22, 1887.
