Description
The memorial celebrates and admires the efforts and lives of men and women who dedicate themselves to the sciences and the human race – our sentinels on watch for threats and opportunities. • The monument’s focal point, an abstract sculpture suggesting, perhaps, some of science’s exploratory tools, was conceived and developed by the artist Theodore Roszak (1907-1981). Poland-born, US-raised and New York-based, Roszak was also a painter and teacher. (Another of his “welded and hammered steel sculptures,” Lederer’s words, stands as a monument in Flushing Meadow Park, Queens.) • The City of New York purchased the sculpture, and it is in the city’s collection. Situated on the plaza approach to a public health laboratory, at 27th Street and First Avenue, New York, New York, across the avenue from the city’s Bellevue Hospital Center, the work was unveiled in 1968.
