Description
The memorial garden, in Cold Spring, New York, remembers and acknowledges those who were touched – slammed may be more fitting -- by the tragedy of September 11, 2001, whether victim or responder, both during and after. • The town’s American patriot garden, to provide for peace and contemplation, includes a flagstaff, plaque-on-stone inscription dedicating the memorial and benches surrounded by trees. Its design sets it adjacent to a children’s play yard, and through the garden’s trees waft the laughter and comfort of youngsters. • The site is situated within Mayor McConville Park, alongside Haldane Street where it intersects with Morris Avenue, off New York’s route 9D. • The town of Cold Spring is the memorial’s lead sponsor and maintainer with continuing volunteer citizen support. Working also on the initiative were the United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service (USFS), particularly its Living Memorials Project; and, the Lower Hudson-Long Island Resource Conservation and Development Council, which “facilitates sustainable growth that is both environmentally sound and socially equitable,” as indicated on its website. • The memorial was dedicated September 11, 2003.
