Description
When on 9/11/2001 the World Trade Center collapsed, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church lost 12 parishioners. A memorial pays tribute to those who died in the terrorist attacks on the towers. Located in Queens county, New York city, the de Sales memorial mourns the six victims who were firefighters and another six who were working in the towers when they collapsed. Unrelated, but within weeks, the parish would lose five more of its family when American Airlines flight 587 crashed into the community, only a few blocks from the church, killing a total of 265 people. (See ID #1490.) • On the grounds of the Catholic parish, in Belle Harbor, the Rockaways, this remembrance is comprised of a plaque mounted to a stone, both situated near eye-level on a brick wall. Included is a cross made of steel from the towers. Also situated atop this wall is a statue of Jesus, welcoming all. The dedication on the plaque tells of the community’s loss and names the deceased parishioners. • Set generally in an open space called the Prayer Garden, the memorial is defined more particularly as it is a part of a bricked plaza arrangement surrounded by evergreens and benches. The Garden, on the grounds of St. Francis, opens onto Rockaway Beach Boulevard between Beach 129th and Beach 130th Streets. • Sponsored by the parish, the memorial was dedicated in 2003.
