Description
This community remembers the loss of 29 of its members in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001. Mostly young, the dead were workers whose employment and careers drew them daily to the towers or were public safety responders trying desperately to help.

• Artist Patrick Clark created the memorial’s commemorative etchings. A prime focus of the site design seems to be a piece of steel from the towers in the shape of a cross, with a flagstaff nearby and the New York skyline across a bay’s waters. Leading toward these elements, to be viewed from a platform before them, is an all-weather, wooden walkway that also contains Clark’s glass etchings – a part of the memorial’s inscriptions – that for all share the remembrance’s story. These etchings were executed by Sunlites Stained Glass, Rockaway Park, New York.

• The memorial is set along Jamaica Bay’s sandy shores, Beach 218th Street at Rockaway Point Boulevard, near the western tip of the Rockaways, Queens, City of New York. The memorial is reached by a permanent walkway from the Boulevard. Though gated, entrance into the community where the memorial is situated seems permitted, though also controlled. (In August, 2013, the writer heard from a reliable source who had visited the memorial that Hurricane Sandy and its concomitant fires had left the work intact.)

• Breezy Point is organized as a cooperative community. The community itself is a primary supporter of the memorial as is the Rockaway Point Volunteer Fire Department, one of only ten such volunteer units in New York City. All involved from the community contributed their labor, needed materials, design inputs and fundraising efforts to create and administer this 9/11 memorial. It is estimated to have been unveiled, or dedicated, in 2002.

Comments and Notes
MATERIALS: Metal dominates given its centralizing effect in the cross; however, design also employs wood, extensively, and glass.
INSCRIPTION PLANES: Main+2 -- date and plaque on cross; also, glass writing at ramp entrance and glass etchings related to those lost.
THE SITE: We say in the Description, above, that though gated, entrance to the community where the memorial is situated seems permitted as well as managed. But be prepared at the community gate to indicate your mission. And while, accurately, the Voices of September 11th website – its memorials section – indicates that it is “Open to the Public: open 24 hours a day,” the writer believes approaching after dark from outside the community could/might present approach and visualization challenges.
SITE MAINTENANCE & SPONSOR(S): Community Group/Not For Profit -- Rockaway Point Volunteer Fire Department; Business/Commerce/Organization -- Rockaway Point Association.
COMMENT: The Breezy Point Cooperative (a.k.a., the Rockaway Point Association) is situated at 202-30 Rockaway Point Boulevard, Rockaway Point, NY 11697.
