Description
This 9/11 memorial in the city of New York remembers and pays tribute to 57 Rockaway Park residents who died at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001. Some residents, 33 men and women, worked in the World Trade Center towers; others, 24 first responders, firefighters, tried to save the workers when the towers came down. The tribute is composed of several integrated design features: a park situated alongside the waters of Jamaica Bay, from which on 9/11 community members watched, helpless and horrified, as the towers disappeared; a glass dome, or cupola – the artist’s title, “The Heavens Over Rockaway”; a hand cut, circular mosaic, of Ground Zero rubble as well as glass, whose navigational star points toward the WTC site; and, a plaque-on-stone remembrance of lost firefighters, topped by, in carved granite, a helmet. The names of the 57 people killed are sandblasted into the cupola’s glass stars.

• Artist Patrick Clark, a Rockaway resident, was chosen to create the stone and glass cupola, the raised, circular ceramic inscription and the firefighters memorial boulder. Too, his was the artistic inspiration that informed Sunlites Stained Glass, the work’s manufacturer, located in Queens. For the firefighter’s helmet sitting atop the boulder, Clark was assisted by the Russian artist Izabella Slobodoff and by Roman Slobodoff. Lynden B. Miller, a noted public garden designer, New York-based, developed the site's design. Nadia Murphy created the landscaping plan.

• The remembrance was sponsored by a number of people and organizations. These included the citizens of the Rockaways; the Rockaway Chamber of Commerce, Liz Sulik, executive director, John Lepore, president; the Rockaway Partnership, a coordinating group of businesses and organizations and the Living Memorials Project of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (USFS). The fire fighters remembrance within the Park was sponsored by the Uniformed Firefighters Association and the Uniformed Fire Officers Association. Tribute Park is maintained by Parks and Recreation, City of New York, and by volunteers.

• Situated at the cross of Beach 116 Street and Beach Channel Drive, at the eastern end of Beach Channel Park, the half-acre sized memorial site is a part of the community of Rockaway Beach, New York, Queens County, the City of New York. The park was dedicated November 6, 2005; a large crowd was in attendance as well as Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other officials. The park was rededicated when the cupola was added to the remembrance site, April 10, 2006.
