Description
This 9/11 memorial at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, New York, recalls two Academy alumni killed in 2001 when terrorists struck the World Trade Center towers in lower Manhattan. Robert D. Colin, b. 1952, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Gilbert Franco Granados, b. 1950, in El Paso, Texas, were 1974 and 1975 USMMA graduates, respectively. They worked in the south tower of the WTC for the Aon Corporation, a multinational company with insurance and other risk-related businesses. Notably, the memorial also expresses the academy’s appreciation to its 144 constituents who operated nine vessels in the New York Harbor and participated for more than a week in the City’s emergency response efforts. Manhattan being an island, the corps moved as needed some 1,300 public safety personnel as well as food, supplies and materials. • The monument is a plaque-on-stone design. It is situated on the west side of Wiley Hall, on the lawn to the south as it slopes downward toward the waters of the Long Island Sound and the USMMA training piers. • The memorial was sponsored by the United States Merchant Marine Academy. USMMA is under the direction of the Maritime Administration, charged with general oversight of the non-military maritime industry. Maritime is a unit of the U.S. Department of Transportation, a federal cabinet department of the United States government, reporting to the president.
