Description
The memorial pulls one’s attention towards and fixes the eye on the mid-point of the Saddle Rock Bridge, in the village of Saddle Rock, New York, on Long Island. From this bridge, looking westward, townspeople were able to see – like others, in bewilderment and disbelief – the World Trade Center’s twin towers burn and then seemingly evaporate, one after the other. In honor, the work reminds an observer of fellow citizens lost, particularly six residents from the Great Neck peninsula, of which Saddle Rock is a part: Peter Frank, Frederick Kuo, Jr., Choon Lee, Andrew Stergiopoulos, Joshua Vitale and Richard Yun. One is reminded too of the giving by countless volunteers and of the hard work so many first responders were able to contribute – some contributing their all and their last. For days following the terrorist attacks on the towers and the WTC’s collapse, the bridge served as a draw for the village; the community was pulled toward its capacity to both give and to receive support, solace. • Core elements of the design of the memorial, clustered about the bridge’s sidewalk containment wall, include an inscribed memorial plaque, which tells the town’s story on that clear Tuesday September morning, and an adjacent flagstaff that flies the stars and stripes by day and night. • Located on West Shore Road just north of Grist Mill Lane and Great Neck Library, the memorial was dedicated December 27, 2001. As the bridge is within Saddle Rock Village and maintained by Nassau County, both entities have continuing site-preservation roles, and both village mayor and county executive were a part of the dedication. The ceremony was also attended by family, clergy and public safety workers as well as local, state and federal representatives and associates.
