Description
This memorial plaque encourages an observer to remember and pray for souls lost during attacks by terrorists on September 11, 2001, on the World Trade Center, New York; at the Pentagon, Arlington, Virginia; and, in the fields of Pennsylvania, at Shanksville.

• In Jersey City, New Jersey, where this bronze 9/11 memorial relief is located, the work pictures the Madonna supporting, seizing the burning trade center towers. Included in this picture also are lower Manhattan buildings that surround the trade center and a tableau, a model, as it were, of the “Katyn Massacre 1940 Memorial,” as the work memorializes Polish citizens who were also killed by terrorists, in 1939-1940 Russia.

• Indeed, the memorial plaque is attached to the west-facing surface of a granite stele that is a central component of the actual Katyn Memorial (included in this database, ID #1902). Situated on Exchange Place, immediately south of Hudson Street as it crosses Montgomery, the “Katyn 9/11 Memorial” allows the observer to lift his or her gaze across the Hudson River toward Manhattan.

• The memorial was sponsored by Stanley Paszul, one of the early and substantial supporters of the “Katyn Massacre 1940 Memorial,” to which, as noted, this 9/11 memorial is attached. Born in Poland, Paszul became a Polish resistance movement member and spent 11 years in Soviet custody, much of it in Siberia. He came in 1963 to the U.S., to New Jersey, where he lived and worked.
