Description
The monument marks the area in White Plains, New York, where on October 28, 1776, George Washington’s Continental Army was attacked, and beaten, by General William Howe’s British and Hessian troops. They crossed the nearby Bronx River and advanced on the future president’s troops, positioned just above on Chatterton Hill. Defeated here by Howe, the continentals continued their retreat north (then west and south, across New Jersey and into Pennsylvania, to Valley Forge). • A piece of artillery mounted on a boulder (here spelled bowlder; and however spelled taken from Mount Misery, understood to be the hill in Orange County, New York), the monument is situated alongside today’s Bronx River Parkway where it crosses under, on the south, the intersecting Tarrytown Road and Main Street. • Standing behind a low stone wall, the monument was created by an act of Congress on May 18, 1926.
