Description
The monument pays tribute to this 16-year-old, and oldest of 12 children, who on the night of April 26, 1777, rode horseback through the countryside of what is now Putnam County, New York, to alert its volunteer militia to the British army’s attacking and burning of Danbury, Connecticut, some 25 miles away. • Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington (1876-1973), noted animal sculptor and producer of equestrian monuments, created the bronze memorial of the youngster. Cast by Roman Bronze Works, New York, horse and rider, sitting side-saddle, stand on a stone base. • Situated on the eastern shore of Lake Gleneida, at lakeside near the convergence of routes US 6 and CR 52, the monument was sponsored originally by the Enoch Crosby Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and is currently administered by county government. It was dedicated by the Chapter on June 3, 1961.
