Description
The memorial gives thanks and provides recognition to those who served in the Great War, from surrounding communities in Yonkers, New York -- McLean Heights and Wakefield Park. • The bronze Art Deco memorial was created by sculptor E. Florio; foundry efforts were supplied by the Eagle Bronze Works Company, of nearby Mount Vernon, New York. • Situated at the eastern tip of Stilwell community park (which was named after four-star general Joseph Warren “Vinegar Joe” Stilwell, Yonkers High School graduate and World War I and World War II veteran), the plaque-on-stone work stands on McLean Avenue where it is intersected by East 241st Street. • Sponsored by the Mothers Club, School No 11, Avalanche Hose Co. No 7, Wakefield Park Taxpayers Assn, Ben Arkinson Ass'n & Ladies Auxiliary. The memorial was dedicated May 30, 1932.
