Comments and Notes
TITLES: Originally called by designers "Phanton Towers"; also, later styled by others "Towers of Light"
MATERIALS: "Tribute in Light" described on Creative Time website as "a temporary art action." It consists of two banks of 44 spotlights each (originally by General Electric) projected into the night sky (powered by Consolidated Edison) creating two 50-square foot beams.
DESIGN DESCRIPTION: Sculpture w/wo pedestal -- observed to be a sculpture in light
DESIGNERS: Individuals who joined together to work as a team:
Paul Myoda and Julian LaVerdiere (artists)
John Bennett and Gustavo Bonevardi (architects, PROUN Space Studio)
Richard Nash Gould (architect)
SITE: Originally situated in Battery Park City (Lot 26), at Vesey and West Streets, NY NY
SITE DEVELOPMENT: Start -- assumed to be 9/23/2001, the date on which a rendering commissioned by The New York Times appeared on its Sunday Magagine cover.
SITE DEVELOPMENT: Dedication -- assumed to be first night lighted, March 11, 2002
SITE MAINTENANCE: Community Group/Not for Profit -- Municipal Art Society of New York, given (by LMDC, below) a five-year contract, 2004-2008, to supoort and operate the memorial.
LEAD SPONSORS: Government, State and Local -- Battery Park City Authority; Lower Manhattan Development Corporation; Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Triborough Bridge and Tunnel)
